Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Gradually mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until fully incorporated.
  5. Divide the dough in half; color one half with red gel food coloring.
  6. Wrap each portion of dough in plastic wrap and chill for about 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  8. Roll equal pieces of red and white dough into thin ropes, twist them together, and shape them into candy cane forms.
  9. Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until just set. Allow them to cool on the trays before serving.
