A festive and traditional Christmas bread filled with dried fruits and nuts, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

  • Total Time: 120 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits (e.g., raisins, cranberries, apricots)
  • 1/2 cup nuts (e.g., walnuts, pecans)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Mix it Up: Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and softened butter into the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough begins to form.
  4. Kneading: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Add Fruits and Nuts: Incorporate the mixed dried fruits and nuts into the dough, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  6. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  7. Prepare to Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Shape the Loaf: Punch down the dough to remove excess air, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake: Bake it in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  11. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool before slicing. Enjoy!

Notes

Experiment with different dried fruits or add chocolate chips for a sweeter version.
