- 1 cup warm water
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 12 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into cubes
- Coarse salt, for sprinkling
- Dipping sauces of choice
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough into small pieces and wrap each piece around a cube of mozzarella cheese.
- In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil. Gently drop the bites into the boiling water for about 30 seconds.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour. For a vegan option, use plant-based cheese alternatives.
